There's got to be a message in here somewhere

Yesterday an old woman came into the restaurant and I asked that she be put in my section. Partly because I had no one to wait on so why not? And partly because my heart always contracts slightly when someone walks in to eat a meal alone. I anticipated a bad tip, or no tip at all. She commented that she was headed to church after this and we chatted for a minute about how she wanted her steak cooked. She relished the food and once, when passing by her table, I watched her slurp almost her entire glass of ice tea in one straw-sucking. She took a long time and I won't lie, once or twice I felt slightly irritated, knowing she was taking up a table and that I wouldn't get more than $1, $2 at most, for her time. Mostly though, I just thought she was sweet and had bangs that had been cut way too short. Who the hell does that to someone? Especially someone wearing coke-bottle glasses who may not even know how her hair looks to others? When she was nearing the end of her meal, she pulled a napkin over to her and painstakingly wrote a note. I went by her table and asked if I could gather any empty plates, bring her any change? She said no, here was a note for me but she had to go to her car and get her money to pay. I panicked, just a little bit. On one hand she couldn't have looked more innocent, on the other, this is how they play it sometimes, right? As she made her way to the parking lot, I ran up to my manager and asked him what to do. He kind of laughed and told me to have faith or run out to the parking lot. At least a couple of minutes went by. And then I looked back and saw her walking, slowly, back towards the restaurant. Her note said: The food was excellent; The service was outstanding. Its a pity that good service is underated. So, I want you to keep the change. Her bill was $11, she left me a $25 tip.

Such a good story; again, excellent writing the way you built up to the end. I'm sure you deserved the tip; hopefully, she'll be a repeat customer!

Mary

You guys make me feel so much better. I debated posting it at all b/c I thought it sounded too much like an internet forward (you know, like, GOD LOVES YOU IF YOU SEND THIS PICTURE OF KITTENS TO 10 PEOPLE).

My mother ate alone, traveled alone, lived alone - and loved it. Moving to a retirement community & group living? Very challenging. She would have loved you, Hope. Mature (cough)ladies can be quite generous.
