An explication

Bud called me Friday night from work - already somewhat late - and told me he had a few more minutes of work to do but he'd be home soon and he wanted me to come out and help him get firewood out of the truck. Firewood Jim had given us. One of his coworkers. I thought it was odd that a coworker had just randomly offered us firewood but we do now live in Alabama so...maybe. The fact that he was asking my sniffly-nose, sore-throat self out to help haul it in gave me pause. I thought about saying I'd help him in the morning, when it was at least above freezing, but something told me to just get my lazy butt up and go out and help. As I walked towards the truck I noticed the bed didn't look full of firewood, but something upright and tall. And Bud was propped against the side like John Travolta in Urban Cowboy. I think that's a scene in Urban Cowboy. Although I am thrilled to have a beautiful new dresser, it wasn't just the gift itself that touched me so much. It was the fact that he bought it on his lunch hour and put it together in the lobby at work, enlisting the help of a coworker and friend who'd just driven in from out of town. And the grin on his face as I ran to the truck. Firewood, indeed.
