Salty ribs
A few weeks back Bud and I were grocery shopping together and found giant packages of ribs on sale in the meat section. Bud, a much better bargain shopper than I, snapped up a package and I followed suit, hoping to look like I knew it was a good deal too. We were going to have a barbeque before everyone left for the summer but that got superceded by other barbeques and bonfires etc so the ribs stayed in the freezer. Monday I decided to start thawing a package since it looked like we had several pounds of ribs to get through by ourselves. I'm dragging this story out but - Bud went ahead and put a rub on them yesterday and put them in the oven on a low heat a couple of hours before dinner. I can't tell you how excited I was - maybe that just means my life is sad - but I was starving by the end of the day and barbequed ribs were all I wanted at that point. I got to Bud's house around 6, after going home and getting Sadie and picking up sour cream for the baked potatoes we were going to have with the ribs. The meat was out of the oven and Bud was on the phone so I went ahead and tore a piece off and tried it. I felt like a deer at a salt lick. Had I been at the Red Sea, gulping water, I don't think I could have consumed more salt. Turns out they were "country style" which I guess translates to "soaked, infused and coated in salt". Then Bud, unknowingly, added more spices and salt and the result was akin to pork jerky. If there is such a thing. Avoiding the entire debacle we went and played tennis for a while - which only exacerbated the fact that our supper was salt with added rib flavor. I ended up having watermelon - partially to quench my thirst from my earlier bite of "meat" - and baked potatoes with sour cream and butter. And those did both hit the spot.
